@AndreaMcFadden -
It's ridiculous that we're getting so upset about it. It's only really in the UK and USA where cultures have such strict taboos about various meats.
I've travelled a great deal in my life and I've eaten snakes and lizards and insects and, yes, cat and dog meat. It's a cultural thing and you have to accept that.
You are totally and completely missing the point.
It's not the horsemeat, per se. Like you, I've traveled all over and eaten things that would curl the toes of the American or Brit. Horses are just another grazing animal and there's technical reason why their meat shouldn't be eaten.
The point you are missing is that because horsemeat is not currently approved for human consumption, it may contain all kinds of stuff - drugs, hormones, agricultural toxins, etc, without our knowing it. I don't mind if they sell horsemeat as long as it is properly labeled, and tested and inspected for human consumption

Just what is it that the Tories enjoy most about killing the poor, the sick and the disabled.

I would just like to know where all these people, who are having to give up their 'spare' bedroom (probably the size of a broom cupboard in one of the Government's second homes paid for by us,) because they cannot afford the extra payament , are meant to go, with a huge shortage of one bedroom properties? A cardboard box perhaps as someone else has suggested? Another ridiculous idea where they have not had the common sense to think through the consequences for so many people. I am ashamed to be British if we allow our citizens to be treated in such a callous way!
  • MrsMagpie
@suzannemae - Exactly ! I have a second bedroom that is just under 6 foot wide. Smaller than a prison cell and only fit for a baby cot. I use it to store vacuum cleaner, ladders, ironing board etc etc as this converted flat has no storage space whatsoever. Also, a very narrow hallway so no chance of shoving something there. This tiny room is actually classed as a "bedroom " I do not receive housing benefit so won't be affected but heaven help those who do.
Any moves afoot I wonder to build a few workhouses

Smacking does happen, and it should not be outlawed. Smacking, providing it does not physically injure the child, is not administered to very young children, and takes place in an emotionally reassuring environment, can assist responsible parents to exercise more control over their children and probably lessen the risks of some children getting out of control and causing serious harm to themselves or to others.
I know that some people will say you cannot smack a child and not cause him/her emotional; yet, it is impossible for any living person not to suffer emotional harm many times in our lives. It might even be harmful for us not to suffer emotional harm, as having such experiences can assist us with dealing with losses and becoming more resilient.

Society need to stop expecting parents to be perfect or be experts at rearing their children to become responsible and productive members of society, while they are being repeatedly undermines and disempowered organs such as governments, the media and adverts.

@BuckHucklebuck -
First, that story paints you as a little mental.
Excellent example of passive aggression, which is still aggression. It's possible to be passive-violent too, which sends mixed-messages to developing minds. I hope that you do not have children.
Second, discipline is good. But assuming it has to be physical is not. You could have achieved the same results with 'naughty stepping' and rewarding good behaviour with positive attention. Which would have taught the child to chase carrots as well as fear the stick of being isolated, and not taught the violence is an acceptable method of shaping there's behaviour.
'Naughtystepping' is a violence in itself, and a punishment which I consider far, far worse than a smack. It is a text-book passive-violent punishment with profound psychologically damaging effects. I consider forced isolation of children to be a far worse punishment than smacking, and although I do very rarely confine one of my sister's children to a room or a cupboard alone, it is explicit as a punishment beyond a light smack.
I feel you have despotic tendencies and need to reevaluate your disciplinary approach to parenthood

    Thanks for the intelligent debate.
I'm going to stick my head above the parapet and say that I was smacked as a child when my mother would lose her temper and lash out violently. This is obviously wrong, but a 'smack' (such and emotive term) doesn't have to be a bad thing and can be an effective and harmless way of instilling discipline if conducted in a controlled fashion.
The bottom line is that we are all animals living in a physical world, human parents are really just evolved animal parents and we have been establishing order and balance in the minds of our young since time began. I light smack doesn't have to cause pain to register effectively, it can just serve as a signal of disapproval. I often babysit for my sisters two children and they sometimes get out of hand, I am not ashamed to say that I use physical punishment very calmly and without any emotion at all. My sister chooses not to do this and was initially upset at my decision to do so, however I laid these down as my own ground rules if she wanted me to continue babysitting and she reluctantly agreed. Now she has seen that the children are far better behaved with me than with her, she is considering using physical punishment herself.

Why not? Obviously nobody wants to hit a child, but sometimes as parents we have to do things we do not enjoy doing, for the good of the child. This awareness comes with maturity, and those too squeamish to administer proper punishment - physical if necessary - probably lack the maturity to become parents in the first place

And while you are at it make ex-NCOs of any service and any sex prime targets for recruitment. It worked well in the past. Then let the cream rise to the top. To hell with parachuting in management theorists or social science grads to the top. That would only make a two-tier force and damage morale

@Hiphenia - Rules? Depends who makes them, how they are inforced, what the motives are, and of course what the rules themselves are
I'm glad Hiphenia doesn't, and never will, make any kind of rules, nor even be a participant in making them.
There's a good case for deporting Hiphenia
We've enough on our hands trying to control this right-wing government
Any suggestions for where we could send Hiphenia?

Dear Mr. Rusbridger, your comfortable metropolitan and public school background makes you very blind to the perspectives of people north of Watford. Scottish independence is one of those rare hopes for the "other" cultures of this island to relieve themselves of the oppressive weight of the culture which this card clearly demonstrates that you and your paper represent. I am English, but very much want Scotland to tell your England to **** off

Au contraire. I'm glad I voted Tory because unlike you I remember that New Labour removed the tax on dividends which provided Philip Green’s wife in Monaco with a £300m gift she would otherwise have had to pay on the £1.2bn dividend from his Oxford Street ratail empire. Gordon Brown as Chancellor in 2000 cut capital gains tax for private equity from 40% to just 10% which enabled them through financial engineering to transform income into capital gains and thus famously pay tax at a lower rate than their cleaning ladies – a process that turned much of the City of London into a tax haven. New Labour also exempted from tax the profits returned to the UK from overseas subsidiary companies , thus encouraging industrial-scale tax avoidance by sending income offshore.
Surely everyone now regrets having voted Labour?

In November 2010, the gossip reached the ears of Brian Williams

And indeed, Williams did not exactly grill him but he did guilelessly ask him a reasonable and quite straightforward question

looked utterly flabbergasted to be confronted with what is likely to be the very first controversy of his reign and stammered a reply: “Er, that’s, that’s, we’ll see, won’t we? But, er, that could be.”

just a ruse to soften up the British public
but that when the crunch came,he would simply go ahead as he had always planned

Actions sometimes speak as loudly as words, and there can be no mistaking the step-up in her public appearances and duties

Then there was the memorable photo of ‘the three Queens’
But the event most blatantly laden with symbolism was the balcony appearance to close the diamond jubilee celebrations in London this year, which excluded all minor royals

message was unmistakeable: this is the line of succession, and she is very much a part of it, so you’d better get used to it
